Stars Reach Playtests, Wipes and the Road to Early Access
The playtest programme is over
If you are looking for a Stars Reach playtest sign-up, the honest answer is that there is nothing to sign up for. Playable Worlds published an “End of Playtest” notice on 12 August 2026, retiring the closed testing programme that had run for over a year. Early Access opened six days later, on 18 August 2026, and buying the game is now the only route in.
The sequence was tight and deliberate: a final community event called “The Final Tour Before The Wipe” on 11 July, Update 8.3.0 “Calm Before the Storm” on 4 August, the playtest closure on 12 August, and the Early Access launch on 18 August.
What the phases actually meant
The official FAQ defines the studio’s own phase language, which matters because “alpha”, “beta” and “Early Access” get used loosely elsewhere:
- Pre-Alpha — the closed period that ran until the game was ready for Early Access. Server and character wipes happened regularly. Access was priority-ordered: $30+ Kickstarter backers first, then players who had signed up for playtesting.
- Alpha — defined by the studio as “all core launch features are present, but not necessarily complete”.
- Beta — defined as “all core launch features are complete, but not all game content is in”.
- Early Access — anyone with a Steam key can play. Server wipes happen occasionally, minimised so the economy and gameplay can be balanced. A final server and player wipe happens when Early Access concludes.
- Launch — free-to-play, preceded by a paid Head Start period of a few days.
Note the date stamp on that source: the FAQ page was last revised 7 March 2025 and still describes the game as being in pre-alpha. The phase definitions are stable; the schedule attached to them is long expired.
Wipes: what is documented
Wipes were a normal part of the playtest era — frequent enough that Playable Worlds ran a community event specifically framed around the last tour before one. The Early Access policy, as stated in the FAQ, is that wipes will still happen occasionally, that the studio will try to minimise them, and that there is a final server and player wipe when Early Access ends.
Practically, that means anything you build now is temporary by policy rather than by accident. It does not mean a wipe is imminent — none has been announced since Early Access opened. It means you should treat a homestead as this season’s project.
The update cadence since launch
The two weeks after Early Access opened are the best available evidence of how actively this is being developed:
| Date | Release |
|---|---|
| 18 Aug 2026 | Early Access opens |
| 19 Aug 2026 | Performance Update |
| 21 Aug 2026 | Update 8.4.0 — the Corruption, new Haven map, alien puzzles, homestead changes |
| 21 Aug 2026 | Hotfix 8.4.3 |
| 24 Aug 2026 | Hotfix 8.4.4 |
| 26 Aug 2026 | Hotfix 8.4.5 |
| 28 Aug 2026 | Hotfix 8.4.6 |
Four hotfixes in ten days is a studio working through a launch, not a studio that shipped and left. It is also why any Stars Reach guide without a build number attached is a liability — see how much moved in Update 8.4.0 alone.
Playtester rewards
Playable Worlds ran a playtester rewards campaign during the closed period. The specifics of what it granted have not been published as a standing document, and with the programme closed it is not something new players can enter. If you tested and are chasing an entitlement, the official support desk at the Playable Worlds help centre — linked from starsreach.com — is the channel for it, not a community wiki.
